President John Mahama has instructed the Inspector-General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, to launch an immediate investigation into the tragic deaths of eight Ghanaians during the 2020 and 2024 general elections.

According to a statement signed by Callistus Mahama, Ph.D., Secretary to the President, these incidents have left an indelible mark on the nation’s democratic process, demanding swift and transparent action.

The statement also highlighted the government’s commitment to ensuring justice for the victims and their families.

The proposed measures include forming a dedicated taskforce within the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to focus solely on these cases.

Additionally, thorough interviews with eyewitnesses and victims’ families are recommended to gather critical evidence.

The government also called for a review of electoral security arrangements to identify lapses and responsibilities during the affected periods.

The President’s directive aims to restore public confidence and uphold the sanctity of Ghana’s democratic process.

A total of eight lives, including three minors were lost during the 2020 Presidential and Parliamentary elections. They are Zakaria Samira, 12, Musah Fuseini, 14 Botwe Tackie, 16, Abdallah Ayarek, 18; Tajudeen Mohammed, 41, Dompreh Emmanuel, 36, and Abass Ibrahim whose age was not stated.

Mahama in March last year promised to institute investigations into the killings.

According to him, his administration will investigate and punish all such persons.

He therefore assured the families of all who lost their lives during the tragic incidents not to despair.

“Insha Allah, when we come into office, we will investigate the killings, bring the perpetrators to face the law and pay the appropriate compensations”, Mahama said this during his campaign in the Techiman North Constituency.
