National communications officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi, has refuted suggestions that the arrest of Rev Owusu Bempah is evidence of a new dawn for rule of law in the country.

According to him, the arrest of the popular self-acclaimed prophet and his troubles with the law is a mere smokescreen to confuse the general public.

Rev Owusu Bempah, along with three others were arrested by the Ghana Police Service for assaulting police officers, issuing threats and also brandishing weapons.

He was picked up by the police on Sunday, September 12, 2021, and faced the courts on Monday, September 13, 2021.

The police administration, especially the Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr George Akuffo Dampare, has been highly praised for acting swiftly and firmly despite Rev Bempah’s status as the spiritual father of the President, Nana Akufo-Addo.

Sammy Gyamfi told Okay FM on Wednesday, September 15, 2021, that if rule of law was at play Rev Owusu Bempah would have been arrested a long time ago.

According to him, the charges against the popular prophet was the least of his crimes.

He also stated that some top New Patriotic Party (NPP) members have also broken laws in the country but they haven’t been prosecuted.

“Looking at how rule of law is applied selectively shows its nonexistence in the country”, he said.

Sammy Gyamfi mentioned that Owusu Bempah’s arrest has been fueled by some factions within the NPP.

He attributed the arrest to Owusu Bempah’s view that Alan Kyerematen is the best candidate to lead the NPP to victory in 2024.

According to the opposition NDC executive, Rev Issac Owusu Bempah does not approve of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as the flagbearer and leader of the NPP hence the reason behind his arrest.
