The Finance Ministry is currently engaged in measures aimed at clearing all arrears to health service providers under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

In an encounter with the media - Deputy Minister for Finance, Abena Osei Asare said at the moment, about Ghc930 million has been released to clear part of the arrears.

Debts owed to health providers in the country via the NHIS currently now runs into millions of Ghana cedis and is said to be a major setback to quality health care delivery in the country.

The Deputy Minister said government was committed to clearing the arrears as evidenced in the initial Ghc930 million released to clear a substantial part of the 1.2billion cedi debt.

She also urged the private health providers to develop and embrace innovative means of partnering with government in clearing the NHIS outstanding: citing the differences in claim payment is a major setback to the scheme.

On another issue surrounding the NHIS, there has been increasing calls from some major stakeholders in the public health sector on government to review the policy to make it more effective.
